GTalk and AIM, sitting in a tree

Looks like Google talk users will soon be able to chat with AIM users. Google Operating System (not an offical Google blog, despite the name) has some screenshots of a new Gmail UI that Google’s testing.

Included in the new Gtalk window is an option to sign onto AIM and your AIM buddies appear right alongside your Gtalk contacts. Cool.

What would be better, however, is real integration. Instead of turning the Gtalk web UI into a mutli-protocol client, how about letting Gtalk and AIM users talk to each other at the server level? Gtalk users should be able to talk directly with AIM users. I shouldn’t have to have an AIM account to chat with an IM user over Gtalk, and I shouldn’t have to use the official Gtalk client to do it.

This is a lot like the Microsoft and Yahoo integration. They didn’t integrate their chat systems, they just implemented each other’s protocols in the official clients.

This is a lot like the Jabber integration to other protocols. In fact, it is. Jabber Transports.

    Hi,

I’ve been “not authorized” to get imified@imified.com’s presence for about a week now I think.

Gmail id I’m using is the email address I entered for this comment.

I removed, and then re-added, and it stays the same.

    Cheers,

    David

I know this kind of stuff should go in the Forum, but I don’t have a google account to use it, sorry.

Since about a month (or more) above I’ve noticed it’s being hard to use imified from whatever computer I’m on: it shows online in MSN (WLM) but the messages/commands just won’t go through: message received is that the user is offline. Where can I find help for this? Another imified user friend of mine has the same problem.

    Thanks for any comments.

I know this is a free service, but has it broken? Could the developers reply?

  8. Rebeca Says:

@Peter: I’m not a developer. But, it’s not broken. I’m using it fine. Some widgets are not currently working though, like the pownce widget… but last I heard, they were working on fixing it. What widgets are you having problems with?

You could probably get more responses at their google group/forum: http://groups.google.com/group/imified

The MSN bot was broken, according to forum update, and should be fixed for good, now! I got mine running! Thank you, imified!! You guys are the BEST!

  10. Dave Hoff Says:

Yes, the MSN issues have been resolved. We do hear some case of users not being able to access our Jabber/Gtalk but. Try removing, then re adding the screen name in your roster. If that doesn’t work, email imified@imified.com with your screen name and we’ll see whats up.
